MAGIC COOKIES FOR HALLOWEEN

This year for Halloween I wanted to offer something different. Recipes that do not lean towards the scary side and a little burlesque that we know at this party but on the contrary that are closer to the essence of this day, its pagan roots and its more esoteric appearance. After having boarded for Hogwarts in 2016 and in the magic cabinet of a witch in 2017 , this year I propose you to continue this dark walk, greedy and enchanted, by waking the witch (or the sorcerer) who is in you, for infuse magic into your life with bewitched little cookies.

Halloween is the survival of a Celtic holiday, called Samain or  Samhain in the Gaelic-speaking countries (pronounced “soween”), which marked the beginning of the new year, the first frosts and the last harvests. Associated with death, it begins the dark half of the year (winter) and is considered a period when the separation between the world of the living and the dead becomes very fine. Death is here seen as a necessary passage of the great circle of life. Dissolve to better reform. This holiday is both the end of a cycle and the beginning of a new one. Samhain was later recovered (like many pagan feasts) by the Church to become All Saints’ Day. The dead are honored, the evil spirits are kept away, and light is lit (bonfires, lanterns and candles). Samhain is nowadays celebrated by many pagan people and is one of the most important celebrations for many witches, who will celebrate this holiday differently according to their practices and their beliefs. There are traces of traditions and popular beliefs related to the celebration of death in France, from Armorican Brittany to the Vosges (formerly inhabited by Celts).

This year I propose some small recipes to celebrate this festival differently, in a more intimate way, to center you, to take stock, to take time for you. Why not start with a good bath with salts and plants, then light candles in your home, serve yourself a good tea and try to divination using tarots, runes or tasséomancie, (the idea is not to read the future but to find keys to better understand the present)? If you wish, this period is ideal to honor the memory of missing persons, in a very simple way, for example by exposing a photo or an object related to this person, by lighting a candle, arranging an offering or some flowers. It is obviously today that We’ll dig the pumpkin into a scary-looking lantern that will keep evil spirits away from your home. No way to make this evening a sad moment, but instead share quality time (and small spice cookies) with your loved ones, to tell you stories, to take this opportunity to share more things to meditate on what you want to release for the coming year in order to move more serenely into the cycle of life. For all this I’ve concocted 4 recipes not really ordinary biscuits, infused plants with fabulous properties to make this party even more magical. but instead share quality time (and small spice cookies) with your loved ones, tell stories, take the opportunity to share more personal things, meditate on what you want to free for year that arrives in order to move more serenely into the cycle of life. For all this I’ve concocted 4 recipes not really ordinary biscuits, infused plants with fabulous properties to make this party even more magical. year that arrives in order to move more serenely into the cycle of life. For all this I’ve concocted 4 recipes not really ordinary biscuits, infused plants with fabulous properties to make this party even more magical. year that arrives in order to move more serenely into the cycle of life. For all this I’ve concocted 4 recipes not really ordinary biscuits, infused plants with fabulous properties to make this party even more magical.

We start with Souls Cakes literally “cakes of souls”, an old and traditional recipe for “All Souls Day”, a Christian celebration of the dead, a direct survivor of Samhain’s Celtic traditions. The custom in England was for children to go door-to-door to sing prayers and beg for alms, which in this country were often in the form of cupcakes. (An article to read on the subject on History Today). This tradition is seen as the likely ancestor of today’s “trick or treat” Halloween where kids go from house to house asking for candy. You can use these cookies as an offering if you want to enjoy this holiday to celebrate your missing loved ones, offer them to children who knock on your doorsteps if you want an alternative to sweets or just to make a recipe a little special to the Halloween opportunity.

In a bowl, work margarine and sugar in ointment. Add salt and spices. Add the almond milk and beat with a whisk. Add the flour little by little, always mixing with a whisk. Finish mixing with the spatula. Add the grapes and mix. Spread the dough on a baking sheet covered with baking paper. Form the cookies with a round cookie cutter. Draw a cross on the biscuit with a knife and / or raisins. Bake for 15 minutes in the oven at 160 ° C.

Samhain / Halloween is the perfect time for divination. Do not have a runes game? I propose you to make one yourself … in the form of small biscuits resembling stones engraved with runes and decorated with wax. A shortbread recipe, a little charcoal and white chocolate, that’s all you need! To make these extra-magical runes biscuits, I added spices to which magical properties such as reinforcing intuition or psychic powers, which are very useful for divination, are attributed.

Need to take care of yourself, pamper yourself and even a little extra energy in this time when everything gets dark? Treat yourself to a little self-love ritual with these pretty vanilla and rose moon croissants, you deserve it. As simple as it may seem, taking the time to say we deserve to be loved and trying to do it for ourselves (which is not necessarily easy) is something very powerful. These sweet and cute little moons will also be great gifts to give to a friend who is going through a bad time, accompanied by some very powerful words like: I’m here for you or you can count on me. If you are a fan of the Harry Potter saga you will not fail to notice that one of the lessons we can draw from this story is that love is one of the most powerful forms of magic.

A time when the spirits of the deceased come to visit us, this is enough to make a little flip? To stay in the tradition of the conspiracy befitting Halloween / Samhain, I offer Talismans-Cookies, which I personally adapted talisman against the evil eye, but you can realize as talismans against evil spirits. For this you can draw the symbols of you prefer (and especially that have sense for you), or even create your own sigils (a sigilis a drawing that represents a magical intention). In the dough biscuits I added spices that have (magic) properties of protection: cinnamon, fennel and anise (but there are others). I drew the symbols using white chocolate dyed black with charcoal, black being a color associated (among others) with the concept of protection. In short you will understand, to see customize this recipe, which can be done at other times of the year if you feel the need.
